I have been learning that I need to find places to work that are outside of my house. When I am home I can get distracted and also feel that I shouldn't doing my chores rather than my work.
Recently I have been visiting local Starbuck's to use wi-fi and avoid distractions at home. It's worked well so far, but I wonder if any others have found places to work from that I might try.
Staying focused is so needed right now. I feel like I am juggling too many plates and one of them is going to fall soon.

The church I go to has done some interesting things like using a giant lite-brite in service and handing out matchbooks as invitations to an event. But this one is possibly the oddest one yet.

Instead of the old fashioned Christmas story portrayed by kids who can't remember their lines there will be a hip-hop dance performance by the kids. I don't know if you missed that...a hip-hop dance.

Now, there have been experiential things I have participated in at church that have stretched my perspective...but come on I was a shepherd and wore my dads robe! How can we let that tradition die!?!?!?

Honestly I love the way Flood Church stretches the comfort level I have in my faith. To be asked to come forward and stand under a chuppah and understand how we are all welcome in God's house, unless you are Jewish and getting married, is not something I'd do, but I love the way I am challenged to experience my faith and not just read it.

So, I say bring on the Christmas hip-hop performance get rid of some those traditions and I'll wear the robe to church!

Today my son was given an award for displaying valor. Valor is translated into bravery, not bravery like a super hero.

His teacher stood up in front of the 2 and 3 grade classes and parents of other award winners and shared that he received this award because he is a person who will stick up for others even at the cost of his reputation and at risk of embarrassment.

She went on to say that she can always count on him to stand up for what's right.

So I now have a bumper sticker on my car:

Well, it's been a long time since I shared on this site.

So much has been happening that I have been inclined to keep it to myself. Until now.

I have updated my layout here because I had some files stored on a server that has been closed to the outside world. I hope the layout works for a while and is happy on the eyes.

I have also been wondering about a strange occurrence of certain people breaking the virtual friendship ties after many years of earthly friendship. I am not sure if I care, but it is truly interesting and having me think about the people who consume my time.

So, as I was feeling down I decided to write down the savings we are having because I am unemployed:

Free school lunches for the boy
Cheap health insurance through CA Healthy Families
Not driving to an office every day saves money usually spent on gas
Not needing to shower on a regular basis saves money on water
Not needing to change out of the clothes you sleep in reduces the amount of laundry and saves money on water
Not needing to be groomed saves money on haircuts

Silver lining......I think so!

Family Vacation, Preface

Well, I drove for just over 1,450 miles and we made it home yesterday around 8pm. The borrowing of in-car dual-screen DVD player was again AWESOME. Without it the kids would have been going crazy.

Our trip went from San Diego to Denair to Yosemite to the Mammoth area (Mammoth Lakes, Reds Meadow (Devil's Postpile), June Lakes, Bodie, Laws) to San Diego.

There were many adventures, Junior Ranger accomplishments, and photos over the 9 days. So, stay tuned.

Well, we've put over 900 miles on the car, slept in Yosemite Valley, seen giant sequoias, seen a black bear (up close and personal) with her cub, swam in a waterfall, caught rainbow trout, watched a meteor shower (or shower-works as Madison calls it), hiked (a lot), visited a ghost town, seen deer up close, and we still have two more day's left.

I got an email today from a name I didn't recognize, but I decided to open it anyway. It was in my gmail account and I figured a large company like Google would be looking out for my best interest and not let a malicious email get through to my inbox.....right?

Life, Death, and My Neighbor

Over the last three weeks I have watched our neighbor deteriorate from a cancer that attacked her liver. Last Monday Mary died.
She died in the house she lived in, literally, since it was built.
She was a warm and caring lady who ALWAYS had a smile on her face.
Mary was at our house when we celebrated the adoption of our daughter.
She and her husband Morris are like an extra set of grandparents to my children.

On Monday, the day Mary died, I spoke with Morris and he shared how it was a blessing to celebrate his wife's life and to be with her while she took her last breath. My heart sank...how does that feeling even feel? How does sitting next to someone who fell in love with you, despite your shortcomings, raised your children, stuck by you in times of hardship, and trusted you to take care of her in her final days REALLY feel?

Tonight I had another opportunity to speak with Morris. I had about 15 minutes of uninterrupted time listening to this 81 year-old man share his perspective on life. He looked deep into my eyes and said "my boy...for whatever it's worth, you have one great family. I know you didn't ask, but I just want to tell you that no matter what happens on the outside...it's what is on the inside that counts."

This coming from a man that grew up in the Depression and created his own business, raised two children, mourned the death of his grandson, fought in a war, worked for hospice, and now is absorbing the loss of his wife.

This, by no means, is some quote that will go down in history, but he spoke it with such conviction, staring right at me with a tear in his eye, that it felt like it was the first time I heard it.

He went on "to know that you live life truthful and with love to your family, friends, customers, and business partners is all that matters. Good times will come and good times will go, but to live a life of honesty...God will bless you. You promise me that you go home and give that beautiful bride of yours a big hug."

He shook my hand and held on to it a second or two longer and looked right at me and said "thanks Alon. Thanks for listening" and then closed the door.

Professor Yehuda Baruch, professor of management, warned that attempts to prevent workers from swearing could have a negative impact.

But Professor Baruch discouraged swearing in front of customers.

'Maintaining solidarity'

He said: "In most scenarios, in particular in the presence of customers or senior staff, profanity must be seriously discouraged or banned.

"However, our study suggested that, in many cases, taboo language serves the needs of people for developing and maintaining solidarity, and as a mechanism to cope with stress. Banning it could backfire.
